Social Cohesion and Social Well-Being:  Inclusion and Dialogue from a Human Rights Perspective

The International Meeting will take place at the Swissôtel (Av. 12 De Octubre 1820 y Luis Cordero - Room: Mont Blanc) in Quito, Ecuador on April 28-29, 2008.

Objectives

  • Contribute to the academic/political dialogue on social cohesion and social well-being, from a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective and a of a universal and effective realization of internationally recognized human rights.
  • Evaluate the indicators and the quality of public opinion measurement on social cohesion and social well-being, from a cross-national and cross-cultural perspective.
  • Present the conclusions of the International Meeting to policy-makers participating in the social and political dialogues between Latin America and the Caribbean –LAC– and the European Union –EU–, including their representatives to the UN Human Rights Council.

Methodology

Along four consecutive workshops, the speakers will offer their presentations, which in turn will lead a multidisciplinary and comparative debate, in which the active participation of all attendants is expected.
                                               
During the plenary session those ideas which elicited the highest consensus and debate through the workshops will be presented.

Results

A consensus document on social cohesion and social well-being, from a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective and a of a universal and effective realization of human rights, reached through an academic debate, to be handed in to policy makers participating in the forums where LAC and the EU meet, including their representatives to the UN Human Rights Council.

There is limited space for participation and registration will close once the quota is complete. Participation will be open only to those who fill out this form on time.

There is no fee for the academic participation; however, the organizers will not cover for any other additional cost.

Co-Chairs of the International Meeting

Cees Flinterman is presently an honorary professor of human rights law at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. From 1998-2007 he was the director of the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) and the Netherlands School of Human Rights Research. Earlier he worked at Leiden University, the University of Ghana, the Ghana Law Reform Commission, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and from 1982-1998 at Maastricht University, where he was professor of international law. His present functions are, inter alia, Editor in Chief of the Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights and member of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

Francisco López-Bermúdez, jurist and political scientist. He is co-founder of ADA – Andean Democratic Audit and  Executive Secretary of the United Nations Association of Ecuador -AENU-. He was (1998) the principal proponent and first consultant for Ecuador’s National Human Rights Plan. He founded and directed (1999-2001) the first national and university Program of Human Rights and Democracy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. In 2007, in recognition of his life long work as a scholar, member of the global south civil society and activist in behalf of democracy and human rights, he was awarded the UNESCO Chair on education for peace, human rights and democracy at Utrecht University, being the first Latin American to receive such a Chair in Europe.
